The state of food security and nutrition in the world

Summary

This report is the annual global tracking report for Sustainable Development Objective (SDG) 2 targets 2.1 and 2.2– to end cravings, food insecurity and poor nutrition in all its forms. It presents the current updated numbers on hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition, in addition to brand-new estimates on the cost of a healthy diet. Previous editions have highlighted several significant chauffeurs of food insecurity and poor nutrition, specifically dispute, environment irregularity and extremes, and economic slowdowns and declines. They have also proposed a policy portfolio to attend to these drivers. However, attaining the required scale of intervention will require appropriate funding.

This year’s report focuses on financing to achieve SDG Targets 2.1 and 2.2. It proposes a new meaning and approach to determine funding for food security and nutrition, and uses it to approximate existing availability and spaces. The report demonstrates that although attaining these targets might bring significant expenses today, refraining from doing so may result in even greater costs tomorrow. Increased funding for food security and nutrition is required, especially in countries with the greatest burden. However, all countries should also use existing funding more effectively. In the long-term, purchasing interventions to deal with the primary drivers will be essential to prevent future higher social, economic, and ecological costs.
