On 1st of April, the General Assembly announced the United Nations Years of Action on Nutrition, 2016-2025.
UNSCN, together with its members, welcomes this crucial action towards mobilising action to eliminate malnutrition in all its forms in all countries.
The UN Years of Action on Nutrition is a commitment of Member States to carry out ten years of continual and meaningful execution of policies and programs, following the suggestions and dedications of the ICN2 Framework for Action and the 2030 Program for Sustainable Development. The Years will increase exposure of nutrition action at the highest level and ensure coordination, reinforce multi-sectoral collaboration, develop synergies and determine development towards sustainable food systems and food and nutrition security for all.
Why do we need a UN Years of Action on Nutrition?
Progress to reduce undernourishment and micronutrient shortages has been far too slow and uneven across areas, countries and populations groups. The frequency of overweight and obesity is increasing in nearly all countries. On the other end, 821 million individuals stay chronically undernourished, 149 million kids under 5 years of age are stunted, over 49.5 million kids under 5 years are wasted, over 2 billion individuals suffer from micronutrient deficiencies and 2 billion individuals are affected by obese (nearly a third of adults around the world) of whom around 678 million are overweight.
The resolution acknowledges the requirement to eradicate appetite and avoid all forms of poor nutrition worldwide.
The UN Decade of Action on Nutrition will offer an umbrella for a broad group of actors to interact to resolve these and other pushing nutrition concerns in order to achieve the goals set out in the 2030 Program.
The General Assembly hire WHO and FAO to lead the application of the UN Years of Action on Nutrition, in cooperation with the World Food Programme, the International Fund for Agricultural Advancement and the United Nations Childrens Fund, and to determine and develop a work programme, utilizing coordination mechanisms such as UNSCN, the UN System Standing Committee on Nutrition.
Michel Mordasini, former Chair of the UNSCN states ” UNSCN stands prepared to work in addition to WHO, FAO in collaboration with IFAD, WFP, UNICEF and other UN companies, to make the Decade a success!”
