Symptoms and signs

Below is a list of common signs and symptoms that might be present if a person is having problem with an eating disorder. This is not a diagnostic tool; the presence or lack of any indications or symptoms does not necessarily indicate someone does or does not have an eating disorder. Due to the fact that each eating disorder emerges differently, the symptoms and signs are broken down by diagnosis.

Anorexia

  • Low body weight– may have significant weight-loss
  • Feels as though he or she is obese, even when that is clearly not the case
  • Rejection of cravings
  • Fixation with body weight and shape (frequent weighing and comments concerning weight and shape)
  • Fixation with food and its nutrients (calories, fat, carbohydrates, etc)
  • Food routines (cutting into really little pieces, extreme chewing, etc)
  • Extreme exercise and dieting
  • Anxiety concerning weight, meal time, and social activities or events
  • Frequent tiredness and overall weakness
  • Dry, thinning, or loss of hair
  • Dry skin and brittle nails
  • Often cold, wearing multiple layers to hide body or to stay warm
  • Downy hair covering body, called lanugo
  • Amenorrhea (loss of menstruation in females)

Binge-purge syndrome Nervosa

  • Frequent variations in body weight
  • Regular episodes of bingeing (consuming large amounts of food) followed by purging (countervailing habits consisting of self-induced throwing up, misuse of diuretics, laxatives, or enemas)
  • Concealing food to consume in personal
  • Feeling of loss of control during binge episodes
  • Feelings of shame and guilt when eating
  • Preoccupied with body weight and shape
  • Preoccupied with workout and dieting
  • Signs of purging consist of frequent trips to restroom (especially after meals), swollen cheeks, cuts or scabs on knuckles and back of hands, stained teeth and dental caries
  • Withdrawal from social activities and events

Binge Consuming Condition

  • Regular episodes of bingeing (taking in big quantities of food)
  • Feeling of loss of control throughout binge episodes
  • Hiding food to consume in personal
  • Sensations of embarassment and regret when consuming
  • Consuming when not physically starving
  • Eating past the point of discomfort
  • Eating alone

Diabulimia

  • Might have extreme weight reduction
  • Disordered consuming habits consisting of restriction or bingeing
  • Secrecy around insulin administration
  • Regular episodes of hypoglycemia
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Boost of thirst and urnination
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis, DKA
