A well balanced and varied diet plan, composed of a large range of nutritious and tasty foods, adds years to life and life to years. Nevertheless, the concern of illness related to poor nutrition continues to grow in the WHO European Region. Unhealthy diets, obese and weight problems add to a large proportion of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), consisting of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes and some cancers, which together are the primary killers in the Region. National surveys in the majority of nations suggest excessive consumption of energy, hydrogenated fat, trans fats, sugar and salt; as well as low usage of vegetables, fruits and entire grains; and increasing numbers of people with obesity– all of which not just shorten life span, but also hurt the quality of life. At the same time, in some countries and among some susceptible groups, undernutrition remains a concern.
