Psychological health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the tensions of life, recognize their abilities, discover well and work well, and contribute to their community. It has intrinsic and important value and is important to our well-being.
At any one time, a diverse set of individual, household, community and structural factors might integrate to safeguard or undermine mental health. Although most people are resilient, individuals who are exposed to adverse circumstances– including poverty, violence, disability and inequality– are at higher risk of developing a mental health condition. Many psychological health conditions can be successfully treated at fairly low expense, yet health systems remain substantially under-resourced and treatment gaps are large all over the world. Mental healthcare is often poor in quality when provided. People with psychological health conditions often also experience stigma, discrimination and human rights infractions.
